Evaluation

Neatline provides flexibility, customized display options and the ability to develop sophisticated and involved exhibits. It will require considerable time and technical support to ensure that it can be used to its full potential.  As with all other platform, it can only perform as well as the quality of the metadata imputed into the Omeka server.

Observed Limitations

Requires a higher level of skill and training than applications like Historypin.

Description of objects need to be adjusted for standards used by Neatline, doesn’t respond well to archival standards of date extents.  Variations of date recording tend to gum up the works.

Almost too many options.  Exhibit objectives need to be clear and boundaries established otherwise plotting quickly gets out of hand.

Requires regular support and maintenance by technical staff to ensure Omeka and Neatline plug-in are up to date.

Customization of display may require changing code, which could impede updates by technical staff.
